Struggling in Palestine

With the entrenchment of Israel's military occupation over the Palestinian Territories in the West Bank and Gaza, traditional sources of income have collapsed. "When your economy is based on 85% agricultural export and your truck of tomatoes have to sit at a checkpoint for hours, days, or weeks, you stop exporting tomatoes," says Palestinian economist Alaa Tartir.
The Palestinian economy has undergone enormous transformations since the beginning of the Oslo process in the 1990s. These changes came with political changes, the creation of the Palestinian Authority, and Israel's outsourcing of surveillance and policing to its security forces. This sequence of stories looks at the economic and political hardships Palestinians face in the territories and how people are finding resilient ways to overcome them.
For more in-depth analysis, check out the work of Al Shabaka, the Journal of Palestine Studies, and the Palestine Monetary Authority. These stories include the work of many researchers and the voices of investigators, economists, and activists, including Nassar Ibrahim, Toufic Haddad, Tariq Dana, Ibrahim Shikaki, Nur Arafeh, and Leila Farsakh.
